Research was focused until lately mainly on radio and spectrum related aspects. However, these can now be considered as just a part of the subject area. The current trends reveal major activity in other relevant fields towards the integration of different techniques for the realization of completely self-aware and self-adaptive communication systems. It is clear that the implications of cognitive networks can be critical for the evolution of future communication systems. Optimizing the coexistence terms of the wireless devices is expected to lead to significantly improved reliability, robustness, performance, cost management, and resource utilization. Hence, it becomes evident that extensively studying the specific area arises as a necessity.

Objective of the Book

The book is intended to provide a complete overview of the cutting edge technologies that are combined for the formation of self-aware, self-adaptive, and self-organizing networks. One of the major goals is to attract chapters on both lower layer and higher layer approaches, all targeting at improving network behavior and user experience via enhancing devices’ intelligence. In this manner, this publication aims to inform the research community and the related industry of the state of the art solutions for cognitive networks, bring the involved technologies together, and clarify the latest trends towards a unified, cross-layer architecture for the realization of cognitive networking.

Target Audience

The target audience of this book will be composed of students, instructors, researchers, and professionals. It could be considered as a modern guide for students and instructors to cognitive, wireless, adaptive, and next generation networks. Researches would find it to be a valuable source of information on the related area, on which source they could rely to develop novel methods and techniques. Lastly, the book could assist professionals in acquiring cutting edge knowledge on their field and motivate them towards the implementation of self-managing networking solutions.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Self-adaptive networks

Self-organizing networks

Self-managing networks

Self-aware networks

Autonomous networks

Cooperative networks

Cognitive radio

Spectrum management issues

Learning automata

Nature inspired networks

QoS and QoE provision in cognitive networks

Energy efficiency in cognitive networks

Heterogeneous cognitive networks

MAC protocols for cognitive networks

Routing schemes for cognitive networks

Mobility management in cognitive networks

Resource allocation in cognitive networks

Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 1, 2012 a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter.
