Internet data traffic continues to grow rapidly. The challenge that operators face, especially in the mobile Internet, is to support more subscribers with higher bandwidth demands. Therefore, operators need to seek for new technologies to efficiently utilize the available network resources, in particular, this concerns resource allocation and flow management. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. The higher rate of optical technology in access networks introduces the potential for capacity sharing problems to move closer to the core, while passive optical networks move sharing problems closer to the end-user (more like cable and radio access networks). Data centers typically employ yet another type of network with different characteristics -- and different tools for capacity sharing. Addressing this topic correctly is not trivial as there are different interests to consider: operators naturally want to be able exercise control on how the network is used, avoid service disruptions and account for network usage. Users are interested to use different applications and expect a certain level of service quality, consistent experience etc. Many applications today are provided by so-called over-the-top (OTT) providers -- in conjunction with web-services, smart-phone applications etc. These applications and the corresponding platforms are important drivers for innovation and sources of revenue -- although there is controversy over whether enough revenue is directed into capacity growth. Still, application providers are interested in their application working with sufficient quality. In addition, there is regulation that can impose additional requirements in some markets, such as availability requirements, network neutrality etc. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the area of transport protocols, system designers of fixed and mobile access networks, and their applications to advance the state of research on capacity sharing. We solicit contributions on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. Topics ------ Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to * Context-aware resource allocation & cross-layer adaptation * Similarities and differences of capacity sharing in mobile and fixed access networks * Application-layer adaption for mobile services * Transport layer solutions and possible interactions with cellular/fixed access networks * Capacity sharing in data centers for Cloud Computing * The interaction between capacity sharing mechanisms at different layers * Leveraging Software-Defined Networking for Capacity Sharing * QoE and fairness definitions, metrics and evaluation * Data traffic characteristics in fixed and mobile Internet * Economic aspects on capacity sharing and business models * Related standardization activities and projects Submission ---------- Submissions must be original, unpublished work, and not under consideration at another conference or journal. Submitted papers must be at most six (6) pages long, including all figures, tables, references, and appendices in 10pt, double column ACM SIGCOMM format. Please see the workshop webpage for further submission guidelines: http://conferences.sigcomm.org/co-next/2012/Workshops/CSWS/ Important Dates ---------------- Abstract submission deadline: July 13, 2012 Paper submission deadline: July 20, 2012 Acceptance notification: September 20, 2012 Camera-ready paper: October 25, 2012 Workshop date: December 10, 2012 Workshop Co-Chairs ------------------ Bob Briscoe, BT Research & Technology, UK Mirja K?hlewind, IKR University of Stuttgart, Germany Dirk Kutscher, NEC Europe Labs Heidelberg, Germany -- Dr. Dirk Kutscher | NEC Laboratories Europe phone: +49 6221 4342 203 | fax: +49 6221 4342 155 | webpage: www.neclab.eu NEC Europe Limited | Registered Office: NEC House, 1 Victoria Road, London W3 6BL | Registered in England 2832014 From fiore at tlc.polito.it Thu Jul 5 12:31:03 2012 From: fiore at tlc.polito.it (Marco Fiore) Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2012 21:31:03 +0200 Subject: [sigcomm] =?windows-1252?q?CFP=3A__The_First_Workshop_on_Urban_Ne?= =?windows-1252?q?tworking_-_UrbaNe=9212=2C_in_conjunction_with_ACM_CoNEXT?= =?windows-1252?q?_2012?= Message-ID: <8DF8A1DE-6C53-430F-9298-55FB6E398FD3@tlc.polito.it> [Apologies if you receive multiple copies] *One week to abstract submission deadline* ------------------------------------------------------------ UrbaNe'12 - The First Workshop on Urban Networking Nice, France, December 10, 2012 http://conferences.sigcomm.org/co-next/2012/workshops/urbane in conjunction with ACM CoNEXT 2012 ------------------------------------------------------------ Overview -------- The urbanization of society continues to increase: in 2009, the fraction of world population living in urban areas was above 50% (more than 75% in developed countries). It is forecasted that another 10% of the world population will move to metropolitan regions within the next 15 years, leading us into the so-called "urban millennium". The scale and the pace that characterize the phenomenon of urbanization raise evident questions on its sustainability. For metropolitan areas to be able to accommodate the current population growth rate and avoid the risk of creating "urban wastelands", the overall management of city resources has to be reconsidered for greater efficiency (and possibly fairness). Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are expected to play a key role in such a process, their capillary integration in urban environments giving birth to "smart/digital cities". This workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from both industry and academia to promote the discussion on networking solutions for upcoming smart/digital cities. It aims at fostering the debate among participants on (i) the identification of the urban features that are the most critical to networking, (ii) the definition and the classification of networking challenges deriving from such features, and (iii) the proposal of original network solutions that can cope with these challenges. Topics of interest ------------------ We invite submissions on all aspects of networking research that have a strong focus on urban environments. Topics include, but are not limited to: - models of human mobility in urban regions - sensor/actuator networks for urban sensing - urban data collection and dissemination - content dissemination to metropolitan mobile users - opportunistic/spontaneous/delay-tolerant networking in urban environments - self-configuring and self-healing autonomous urban networks - protocols for capillary urban networks - infrastructure deployment in urban environments - cellular networks for urban areas - intelligent urban transportation systems - management of critical resources in urban environments (water, energy, etc.) - internet of things and augmented reality for urban environments Submissions guidelines ---------------------- Submitted papers must be at most six (6) pages long, including all figures, tables, references, and appendices. They must be formatted according to the standard alternate ACM double column format and must use a font size of 10 pt or larger. Longer submissions will not be reviewed. You are strongly encouraged to use the modified 10 pt ACM sig-alternate-10pt latex template. Submitted papers must not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Accepted papers will be published in CoNEXT 2012 proceedings, and available on the ACM Digital Library.
