From acerpa at ucmerced.edu Tue Aug 7 12:21:34 2007 From: acerpa at ucmerced.edu (Alberto Cerpa) Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2007 20:21:34 +0100 (BST) Subject: [sigcomm] CFA: SENSYS 2007 student travel grants Message-ID: <20070807192134.AB2191C320C@ubicomp1.comp.lancs.ac.uk> ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Applications Sensys 2007 Student Travel Grant Program http://sensys.acm.org/2007/Student%20Travel%20Grant.html (Sincere apologies if multiple copies of this announcement is received) Overview -------- Sensys 2007 expects to receive a limited number of travel grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). The grants aim to support graduate students in U.S. academic institutions to attend the 5th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (Sensys 2007) in Sydney, Australia on November 6-9, 2007. An important goal is to broaden participation in the conference by supporting students with interests in sensor network research who would otherwise be unable to attend. *** IMPORTANT: Applicants should note that although we have every reason to expect that the funding is forthcoming, final approval by NSF for the travel grants is pending. Hence, it is possible, although very unlikely, that no award will be given due to unavailable funding. Form and Amount of Support -------------------------- The support is intended to defray, but not necessarily to cover entirely, the costs of attending the conference. The costs include transportation, hotel, and meals. Student conference registration will be waived for student awarded travel grants. We expect to award approximately fourteen student travel grants, at an amount not to exceed $1800 per grant. The award will be will be handled via reimbursements. Each legitimate expense must be documented with an original official receipt (e.g., air ticket and hotel receipt). The reimbursement will be sent as a check via postal mail six to eight weeks after submitting the reimbursement forms and supporting receipts. Further details of the reimbursement procedure will be communicated to the award recipients. Awardees who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents will also need to provide a copy of their passport, the I-94 form, and a valid student visa. *** IMPORTANT: It is the responsibility of the successful applicants to make sure that he/she will have a suitable travel visa to attend the conference in Australia. Further information on the visa application can be found at: http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/index.htm How to Apply ------------ 1) The applicant should send an application containing: - A vita, containing basic information such as the degrees earned, the current academic institution and degree objective, relevant coursework and grades, and relevant publications or other research output. - A letter that (i) briefly summarizes the applicant's current research interests and relevant research accomplishments; (ii) states the conferences/workshops, if any, previously attended; (iii) discusses how attendance in Sensys 2007 will benefit the professional development of the applicant, including the technical sessions that are particularly interesting; and (iv) any other relevant information that the applicant feels is particularly noteworthy (but please keep it brief). 2) The advisor should send a supporting letter for the application stating (i) the name of the student applicant; (ii) that the student is a Ph.D. student in good standing in his/her institution; (iii) a brief evaluation of the student's strengths in areas of interest to Sensys; and (iv) why the student is in need of a travel grant (in particular, if the student is the coauthor of an accepted paper, the letter must specify if the other co-authors will be attending and presenting the work). Applications and the support letters should be emailed by the applicant and the applicant's advisor, respectively, to sensys2007 at ucmerced.edu with subject line "Sensys Student Travel Grant Application" or "Sensys Student Travel Grant Support letter". ASCII format is strongly preferred, although PDF format is acceptable. The goal of the travel student program is to broaden the participation of students from various universities. Women and minorities students, as well as students pursing their graduate studies in Minority Serving Institutions, such as, Historically Black Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and institutions that serve Pacific Islanders and persons with disabilities will be given preference when other qualifications are similar and any other criteria as appropriate will be used to encourage wider participation in the conference. Deadline Approaching Book Title: Localization Algorithms and Strategies for Wireless Sensor Networks: Monitoring and Surveillance Techniques for Target Tracking Book webpage: http://www.ee.usyd.edu.au/~guoqiang/Research/BookOnLocalizationAlgorithms.htm Editors: Guoqiang Mao and Baris Fidan Publishing Details: This book will be published by IGI Global http://www.igi-pub.com/ in 2008. Introduction Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) constitute a significant technology of today, attracting considerable research interest from various disciplines. Self-localization capability is a highly desirable characteristic of wireless sensor networks. In environmental monitoring applications such as bush fire surveillance, water quality monitoring and precision agriculture, the measurement data are meaningless without knowing the location from where the data are obtained. Moreover, location estimation may enable a myriad of applications such as inventory management, intrusion detection, road traffic monitoring, health monitoring, reconnaissance and surveillance. This book intends to cover the fundamental theories, the state-of-the-art research findings, and experimental studies and applications of WSN localization techniques. We expect the book to serve as a valuable and comprehensive reference for students, educators, researchers, and engineers who work in this rapidly evolving field. Recommended topics (not limited to) ? Measurements techniques used in WSN localization ? WSN localization algorithms ? Fundamental theories in WSN localization ? Graph theoretical analysis of characteristics of WSNs and application of such analysis to WSN localization ? Monitoring and surveillance techniques ? Experimental studies ? Applications of WSN localization techniques Invitation Prospective chapter authors are invited to submit, initially, a 1-2 page single column, single space proposal describing the proposed chapter in MS Word or RTF format. The proposal should include the title, the abstract, the chapter organization, number of pages of the final manuscript intended to be submitted and contact authors. Each chapter is planned to fit 15-25 letter-size pages (single column, single space, 12 pt font). However, (only) fundamental chapter proposals of comprehensive review/survey style will be allowed to be up to 40 pages. Chapter templates will be provided once the proposals are submitted and acceptance decisions are made. Important Dates ? Submission of Chapter Proposals: September 15, 2007 ? Notification of Proposal Acceptance: October 15, 2007 ? Full Chapter Submission: March 15, 2008 ? Review Reports Due: May 15, 2008 ?
