The default operation of the keepalive timer depends on the OS. Linux
and Windows don't send keepalives by default, as far as I recall; when
enabled, the recommended default value is around 2 hours.
Also, some NAT/firewalls will timeout idle connections long before that
(usually 1h, sometimes as low as 15m, or as high as 5d). Depending on
the host OS, an idle connection abandoned by a NAT/firewall can show up
as a timeout error.
